Intro
A referrer code is a short identifier, or piece of text, that helps distinguish different sources of customer traffic—i.e. the places that referred them to iTickets.
For example, imagine that you want to run two ads for your event: one on Facebook, and one through email. You could attach the codes facebook
and email
to the respective ads. When each customer orders, the code will tell you which ad they clicked (if any). This is a great way to track the return on your marketing investments.
Some notes:
- Referrer codes will work on tour pages and event page URL's (new as of Jan 2025*)
- Referrer codes will work even on master events and private label events.
- Referrer codes cannot contain spaces.
- Referrer codes cannot be used at the same time that a password presale is active. The presale password will override them for all orders placed before the public on-sale.
See below for a few ways to use a referrer code.
Embed in URL
The simplest way is to use a different tracking URL in each place that links to your event, with the appropriate referrer code embedded inside the URL.
Find Destination URL
Begin with the URL of your event. For example, an iTickets event page:
https://www.itickets.com/events/365868
(Instead of 365868
, your event page URL will have its own event ID at the end.)
In some cases, you can also use a landing page instead of an iTickets event page. However, it must be programmed to handle an iTickets referrer code.
Create Tracking URL
Use our URL Builder to create the tracking URL. (First read the the details below.)
This form has a few extra fields on it, in case you want a full tracking URL that uses the UTM standard. (This enables compatibility with services like Google Analytics.)
- Destination URL is described above.
- Source field can be something basic, like the name of the organization or platform that controls the ad space. This field is not important to Box Office; only to Google Analytics, and other fully featured tracking solutions.
- Content field is the referrer code you want to use. It can be the same as Source, or something more specific like a numeric ID. This is the only field that will appear on Box Office orders.
Once all the data is entered, a modified URL will appear at the bottom, with the tracking info embedded. You can copy this to use wherever you like.
In the example above, if a customer clicks the tracking URL and then places an order, their order will be marked with the referrer code 154-270818
.
Tip: To shorten a tracking URL use a service like Bitly. With this, you can track clicks too (instead of just pageviews & conversions, etc).
Manual Entry
If you have customer traffic from places with no tracking URL, a referrer code can be manually entered on orders. You can enable this field for customers and/or admins.
Customers
From inside the event, go to Order Settings > Customer Order.
Under "Items Page," find the checkbox labelled "Display referrer code field," enable it, and click Save.
Admins
